ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we examined the strategic objective of building global capabilities at the organization level, and we showed how the concept of global capability, and the roles that this brings to the fore in HRM functions, can be thought about at the inter-organizational level, the intra-organizational level and the intra-HRM function level. However, for many writers these three contexts are in turn conditioned fundamentally by the conduct of people within the MNE, and the readiness of these people to understand the complexities of global operations outlined in the previous chapter. In this chapter we lay out what we see as the second strategic objective of global HRM, which is to develop international management competencies at the individual level.
