ABSTRACT

A self-styled "Crackro-American" humorist, Roy Blount, Jr., has plied his trade as a sports writer, commentator on contemporary relationships between men and women and political analyst. Born October 4, 1941, in Indiana polis, Indiana, Blount grew up in Decatur, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. His father, Roy Alton Blount, a savings and loan director, was a civic-minded man, active in the Methodist church. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Blount graduated magna cum laude in 1963 and won a Woodrow Wilson fellowship to continue graduate study in English at Harvard. Blount might be called a cosmopolitan regionalist. The southern love of language especially delights Blount. Blount rejoices in all of those who go against the grain, especially those who joyfully goof up and without a moment's anxiety embarrass themselves. The Southerners whom Blount finds fascinating are earthier men such as Billy Carter, Andrew Young, Big Jim Folsom and Jerry Jeff Walker.
