ABSTRACT

This chapter encourages to be mindful at the outset of assigned developmental relationships. In order to enhance the value and enjoyment derived from mentoring-both ones own and ones mentee's- be clear and deliberate about structuring new relationships. Be transparent about expectations of students and faculty, and clarify the distinctions between advising or sponsoring and mentoring. Encourage new students to articulate their own goals and relationship expectations. Seek agreement about anticipated relationship duration, frequency, and context for interaction; boundaries to be respected by both parties; and a reasonable commitment to confidentiality. Agree to periodic evaluations of the mentorship, and acknowledge the right of either party to conclude the relationship at any time without fault. Consider a brief advising agreement with new students as an excellent tool for laying the groundwork for shared expectations. Finally, provide new advisees and supervisees with guidance about excellent performance in that role.
