ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the complexities and subtleties of this key human phenomenon. The crucial nature of leadership is demonstrated by the organizational vulnerability created in its absence. One of the most crucial aspects of domestic security is the nation's information infrastructure. This vast nervous system of networks, servers, databases, and software and communication lines controls our transportation and financial systems, food and power sources, commerce and public health systems, government services, and so much more. The professional exemplar profiled in the case demonstrates the ideals: technical skill, moral courage, and leadership ability. While professionals require task expertise, to be leaders they need people and organizational skills too. People-oriented talents include consulting, personnel planning, employee motivation, team building, as well as conflict and change management. Professionals also need strong organizational competencies: environmental scanning, strategic planning, vision articulation, networking, decision-making, and managing organizational change.
