ABSTRACT

Gradual techs are much looser and freer with the integration of technical elements. With this approach, typically have a week designated for technical elements to be added in to the show as they become available. The addition of technical elements into a show invariably gets a cast excited. When they see the lights, set pieces, props. coming into place, the reality and closeness of opening night sets in and often kicks the actors into a new gear. The first technical rehearsal came, and we had a full set—complete with 14-foot-high walls, doors, windows, tables, chairs, stools, and a working kitchen. The ethereal design elements are often the most difficult for a young director to judge in a technical rehearsal. The best lighting and sound designs are subtle and supportive, complementing direction and leading the audience’s attention. The specific physical, vocal, and character work should have long been completed, which was part of setting the show as moved into tech rehearsals.
