ABSTRACT

Actors have auditions. Designers have portfolios full of beautiful sketches, renderings, and photographs. Stage managers have prompt books and reams of paperwork. Portfolios for directors are a somewhat nebulous thing, as there are no established criteria for what constitutes a “standard” directing portfolio. Part of the reason is that many companies hire directors based on recommendations, word of mouth, or familiarity. Every theatre has its own method of archiving video footage, some more advanced than others. In an online format, in addition to the contact information on resume, have a contact page that includes all the information. Many hosting services provide email forms that can be embedded on the page, and these are great. Find scenes that showcase movement of actors through space and utilization of the scenic and property elements, and use clips that come from climactic moments in the script to show how to handle them.
