ABSTRACT

Many directors, when scheduling rehearsals, use a simple formula of one hour of rehearsal for every minute of the play. For this reason, six weeks is a relatively standard length for rehearsals in most educational and community theatres, assuming rehearsals average around three hours per night. When building rehearsal calendar, it’s important to talk with production team ahead of time, to see how much rehearsal time they think they are going to need. This includes designers and TD for technical and dress rehearsals, and any other artists who might be working on specialized areas of the show. The rehearsal process for directors is, in large part, all about being flexible. The unexpected will always arise and the unaccounted for will always be discovered. Some directors like to break down rehearsals in list form, as opposed to using a calendar.
