ABSTRACT

This chapter first provides the theoretical foundations and definitions of organizational identity from an organizational studies perspective, including the social actor perspective as defined by the seminal work of Albert and Whetten (1985) and the social constructionist perspective (Gioia, Schultz, & Corley, 2000; Hatch, 2010; Ravasi & Schultz, 2006). The chapter then reviews the scholarship on collective identity—with a focus on national identity—across the social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, and history.
