ABSTRACT

This chapter develops a theoretical framework on the relationship between organizational identity and organizational memory, in particular history and commemoration. It takes a more targeted approach to both topics in that it explores the relationship between the two concepts, drawing on the wide range of social science theory and research reviewed in this text. Collective memory is the primary lens to address organizational memory, although the relevant theory and research related to memory of collectives such as nations or cultural groups are also incorporated. Organizational identity is the primary focus for the work on identity, although on occasion the identity of nations or cultural groups is also considered. The emphasis is on the relationship between these concepts at the collective level of analysis, with acknowledgment of the factors that influence this relationship as well as the micro-level processes that contribute to the collective level. Through the analysis and integration of the literature, this framework provides a foundation for future theorizing and empirical work on organizational identity and memory and its relationship to practice.
