ABSTRACT

In this and the following chapter we examine personal and social development from childhood through to adolescence. What is personality? Personality refers to characteristics of people that are obvious in a variety of situations. Personality is stable; that is, we do not change into fundamentally different people from day-to-day. Personality is also organised, that is, its attributes are interrelated. It is certain that personality is formed through the interaction between innate biological mechanisms for particular behaviours and the environment. Personality is also distinctive, each personality being unique (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2011). It is important for educators and other professionals dealing with children to understand some aspects of personality, and personality development, in order to facilitate the development of children.
