ABSTRACT

A substance which is a body (jism), is a composite (murrakab) of matter (mādda) and of form (ṣura). Accordingly, body is that substance (jauhar) into which one can place (numūdan) a first longitude (i.e. a straight line) and another longitude in the figure of a cross ( chalīpā) such that the second intersects with the first without being inclined (mail) in a horizontal direction, such as in this cross: https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315670102/543be348-15f3-47b5-ad1c-093eb3e688d5/content/fig4_16_1_B.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> but not as in this cross: 1 https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315670102/543be348-15f3-47b5-ad1c-093eb3e688d5/content/fig4_16_2_B.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
