ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book details the typical writing tasks encountered as one progresses through school. It discusses the four aspects of clear writing as four different types of knowledge: writing process knowledge, subject matter knowledge, genre knowledge and rhetorical knowledge. Students entering architecture school often cite the ability to be creative while earning a reasonable living as a prime motivator for choosing architecture. The book follows the standard architectural curriculum and helps guide students through its writing component. Though it is organized to track the typical assignments students encounter as they move up and through the curriculum, it shows that practitioners will find it to be a ready reference to help them clarify why architects write and who architects are writing for. The book explores the moments of transcendence of one's previous limitations with practical advice for clearer writing.
