ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 begins with a definition of “evidence-based interventions” and provides helpful sources of evidence-based interventions and program. A discussion of the widely used Multi-Tiered Student Support is included. This three-tiered process applies accountability to educational interventions by focusing on programs that work rather than programs that simply look, sound, or feel good. The three tiers are (1) classroom-based interventions/programs for all students, (2) small group counseling interventions/programs for students who need more support, and (3) individual counseling and referral for more intensive support. School counselors play an important role in all three of these levels. A particularly helpful aspect of this chapter is an explanation of how evidence-based school counseling is connected to three important overlapping categories, each of which are tied to the ASCA National Model: social/emotional learning (SEL), non-cognitive factors, and college and career Readiness. These three areas become the basis for school counselor interventions and increase the potential of school counselors to show how their programs can impact students in positive ways. The chapter concludes with a concise and encouraging summary of the outcome research base for school counseling.
