ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 starts with an overview of the 2016 Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards for field-based courses, including the minimum number of hours, relevant counseling experiences, the supervisor’s professional credentials, and supervision training process. Next, the authors address the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) Ethical Standards for School Counselors related to school counselor candidates in school-based field experiences. The 2016 ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors expand the responsibilities of school counselor site supervisors and provide requirements about supervisor qualifications, supervisory models and relationships, supervisory activities, supervisor evaluations, and communication with the university or college supervisor. The authors also discuss methods for utilizing technology to support synchronous and asynchronous supervision activities. Throughout the chapter, readers are introduced to numerous planning, counseling skills evaluation rubrics (e.g., individual, small group, classroom guidance, and consultation), and professional practice self-reflection forms to assess graduate students’ competence and skill level.
