ABSTRACT

One of the most awe-inspiring developments in the modern age is the concept of mobile computing – specifically when it relates to the hundreds of millions of tablets, iPads and phones. Of these mobile devices, the class of systems that has most affected the audio production community in a very direct way is the iOS range of devices from Apple. This chapter offers a basic glimpse into how the iOS can integrate into an audio production system with professional results that have made portable production more mobile, cost-effective and fun. Audio on the Mac OS and the iOS is handled through an integrated programming service called Core Audio. The number of interface options for connecting an iPad or iPhone to a high-quality mic or integrating these devices into the studio system continues to grow in ways which generally fall into two categories: docking device and standard audio interface.
