ABSTRACT

Over the years, audio production and electronic music have evolved into an indispensable production tool within almost all forms of media production. In video postproduction, for example, video workstations, digital audio workstations, automated console systems and electronic musical instruments routinely work together to help create a soundtrack and refine it into its finished form. This chapter discusses the various forms of synchronization used between these analog and digital devices, as well as current methods for maintaining sync between the various media types. It also discusses the various sync systems that have been developed over the years to maintain a stable timing reference between digital and analog audio and MIDI-related media devices. The standard method of interlocking audio, video and film transports makes use of a code that was developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
