ABSTRACT

The fact that MIDI 1.0 has been in place from 1983 till 2020 (almost 40 years!) is an amazing testament to the individuals and companies that joined forces to create a robust spec that has forever changed the face of music production. The result of a global, decade-long development, MIDI 2.0 is an effort to keep MIDI relevant in the future, using a new Universal MIDI Packet format that allows for easier communication over any digital medium. One of the biggest developments in 2.0 is its expansion from 7-bit values to 16-bit. The list of available controllers has been expanded to over 32,000 different controller options, while their values have been enhanced by offering a 32-bit range. MIDI 2.0 has improved timing accuracy for making sure that notes and other event types occur at precisely the right time. Timing problems can often crop up when a great deal of MIDI data is passed through a single connection.
