ABSTRACT

A MIDI controller is a device that’s expressly designed to control other devices (be they for sound, light or mechanical control) within a connected MIDI system. With the rise of computers, sound modules, virtual software instruments and other types of digital devices have come onto the production scene that don’t incorporate a music keyboard into their design, so it makes sense that the MIDI keyboard controller has grown in popularity, to the point that it is standard in most production setups. Another type of interaction involves the direct and dedicated integration between a controller and compatible software instrument or effects plugin. MIDI drum controllers are used to translate the voicings and expressiveness of a drum or percussion performance into MIDI data. These “hands-on” devices are great for capturing the feel of an actual live performance, while giving the flexibility of re-voicing, editing and automating a captured MIDI track.
