ABSTRACT

A pronoun is a word which stands in for a noun. In English instead of saying table we say it. In French everything is either masculine or feminine so the table is she (elle) and the book is he (il). Remember that in French everything is either masculine or feminine. A chair is feminine, so if you want to say anything about it, you have to use elle (she); similarly, a book is masculine so if you want to refer to it, you have to say il (he). You use nous to talk about yourself and someone else. You use it when you would use we in English. Vous is often referred to as the ‘polite’ form, as it is used not only in the plural but also when talking to someone older than you or to a stranger, even if there is only one person. In French, you always put the indirect object pronoun in front of the verb.
