Chapter Four
ANALYZING SURFACE RECEIVING WATER BODIES
Melvin 0. Hinson, Jr.,, and Daniel J. Basta
INTRODUCTION
Surface receiving water systems^ are defined as surface water bodies
into which residuals are directly or indirectly discharged. Surface re
ceiving water systems include: flowing and intermittent streams, rivers,
lakes, ponds, reservoirs, estuaries, and offshore marine systems. The
last systems consist of waters which generally lie outside salinity tran
sition zones but receive residuals via tidal exchange, ocean outfalls, and
dumping, e.g., barge or dredge discharges. Boundaries for analyzing a
given receiving water system will vary depending on the management context.
