ABSTRACT

Contestation and connection The sovereign state plays an important role in constituting political life and its manifestations. In the fields of migration control and management, identities of the mobile body are scripted in numerous ways by those involved in immigration governance. In the asylum determination process the applicant’s claims of displacement for political reasons and suffering from a well-founded fear of persecution are examined. It is also assessed whether the applicant is likely to be persecuted upon return to the country of origin. If these conditions are fulfilled, the applicant is granted refugee status. In the Finnish context, all other grounds upon which the applicant could receive a residence permit are also examined.
