ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly touches upon the basic data journalism process before discussing data visualisation. It seems that the production and consumption of online journalism mutually influence each other: Recurring claims that our attention spans are declining have prompted online journalists to produce more bite-sized articles. Mobile devices have also shaped journalism in the way journalistic content is produced. For example, they can aid journalists as digital reporting tools. In 2007, Nokia and Reuters released special smartphone-based mobile toolkits targeted at journalists. Journalists equipped with mobile handsets have a tendency to respond faster to breaking events. Broadband connections, cheap memory and smartphones' capabilities to shoot and record broadcast-quality video and audio have democratised the journalistic production process. This easy access to technology does not replace solid journalistic core skills, but it substantially compresses the time from recording to broadcasting a report.
