ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how to write source code for science journalists. It presents a basic understanding of what distinguishes online writing from print publications and how readers interact with online articles. The chapter discusses how the science blog networks can help them increase their reach and develop relationships with fellow science bloggers, which often leads to interesting scientific discourses and cross-posts. It presents two case studies of online science journalism. The first is a short, news story-like blog post that is based on a press release. In contrast, the second is a long-form, award-winning science story whose author beautifully employs narrative techniques to both tell the story and convey the science behind it. Science writing for an online audience is different from print in many ways. The immediacy of online journalism is both striking and intriguing. Structural differences between online and print writing aside, blogs allow a different tone, voice and style than, for example, an established newspaper.
