ABSTRACT

Since 1946 the United States has acquired twenty-seven years of engineering development and over thirty plant-years of pilot plant experience with liquid metal fast breeder reactors (LMFBRs). The scientific feasibility of breeding fissile fuel has been demonstrated with two small operational LMFBRs, Experimental Breeder Reactor I and II, in the United States, and with several similar plants in the U.S.S.R., United Kingdom, and France. However, the economic benefits and safety of commercial-size LMFBRs has yet to be demonstrated.
