ABSTRACT

Health effects associated with routine releases of radioactivity from operating nuclear power plants represent only part of the overall risk to public health from these plants. Clearly, some risk of accidental release of radioactivity exists, both at the reactor and in other sectors of the nuclear fuel cycle. In this section, I will attempt to place in perspective the health risk associated with accidental releases from the reactor itself. Since most of the studies in this area are based on LWRs, the health risk associated with these reactors will be discussed as a means of introducing the hazards associated with LMFBRs.
