ABSTRACT
This chapter elaborates the questions raised in ‘Making a County Force’, by looking at recruitment in Buckinghamshire, Staffordshire, and other places, over the quarter-century after 1856. The details discussed here will provide a framework for a later consideration of both the attitudes and assumptions bought by police authorities when they paid a policeman’s wages, and the changes that men themselves had to make in order to become policemen.
