ABSTRACT

This is a book about challenging behaviour, but it is also a book about children, young people and adults with severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and to a lesser degree (but only because there is so much published material available) Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). To the author’s knowledge it is the only ‘how to’ non-academic book written about behaviour and SLD/PMLD. And it is deliberately non-academic because, whilst behaviour is an extremely complicated business, the potential resolutions to the problems don’t have to be that complicated. Rather, I would suggest, they are routed in common sense and, as long as certain principles are followed, solutions for even the most complex and seemingly intractable behaviours can be found.
