ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 ‘Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)’ we established that autism is a complex neurological condition affecting communication, social interaction and flexibility of thinking and behaviour – otherwise known as the Triad of Impairments. To these we might add the fourth impairment of sensory processing. The core features that make up the condition of autism are (i) durable over time and (ii) accompanied by rituals, compulsions, high levels of anxiety and a desire for sameness.
