ABSTRACT

Work is basic to the ways in which human beings deal with the problems arising from the scarcity of resources available in the environment. Work has had different meanings for people generally in different societies at different times in history. The work orientations and work experiences of individuals are intimately related to the broad structural patterns of modern societies – patterns having interlinked corporate and societal dimensions. The work orientations of women in paid employment are inevitably influenced by the implications of their gender and all that this implies for their life career. The expression about 'reinventing oneself' is rather interesting here and neatly captures two people's shift in both life orientation and work orientation. The implicit employment contract is the largely tacit agreement made between the two parties with regard to what will be given by each and what each will take from the relationship.
