ABSTRACT

As reported in Chapters 2 and 3 , we realized that we needed to provide as much evidence as possible to show that the emotional intelligence (EI) construct was a worthwhile topic for scientifi c investigation during the fi rst few years of our investigation. Shortly after the Leadership Quarterly invited us to submit our fi rst paper, I was thinking about how to show the validity of the EI construct from another angle. We were still following the basic idea that EI should have a stronger relationship with job outcomes for jobs requiring a high level of emotional labor. The idea was not new because it was basically a replication. The challenge was how we could have constructive extensions in a replication study. In other words, we needed to convince readers that the additional evidence was reasonable and of suffi cient meaning.
