ABSTRACT
T H R E E arguments for the execution of capital offenders are: (1) execution is the only way to guarantee that they will not kill again; (2) life imprisonment provides the opportunity for escape, parole, or additional murders of other inmates or correctional personnel; and (3) life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is costly. The first two arguments are concerned with the future dangerousness of convicted capital offenders. The third argument focuses on the supposed added tax burden of justice systems without capital punishment. This chapter examines each of the arguments.
