ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the voices of the children of LGBTQI+ people. It examines that the decision-making process children go through in 'coming out' as the child of LGBTQI+ parents at school within this environment, and looks at the importance of friendships as a source of children's resilience. The chapter begins by looking at groups for LGBTQI+ students and allies and their value in building a support system. It addresses children's experience of school disciplinary responses to homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and language. The chapter provides a summary of the advice given to schools by the children the authors interviewed—including on whether teachers should come out, and explores that how the scant LGBTQI+ content which is delivered needs to be more nuanced and inclusive. It discusses the interview responses under three broad themes: the child and family; peer relationships; and schools, although, mirroring the home/school borderlands, these themes overlap to some extent.
