ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the various key events that serve as triggers for learning for student leaders. It focuses on key events that are challenging experiences. Challenging experiences are one of the best ways for up and coming leaders to learn leadership. What might be challenging for one person for one reason, might be challenging in an entirely different way for another. Students learned about the larger university and how to work within it. Organizational savvy is an understanding of how individuals, clubs and organizations, and the university function, how they intertwine, and how to react appropriately within and between those systems. People tend to place the success or failure of a committee, project team, or task force squarely on the shoulders of the leader, making it quite a challenging experience, especially the first time a person volunteers to take it on.
