ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some fundamental ideas to consider regarding copyright when creating, modifying, and using open educational resources (OERs). According to Merriam-Webster, copyright is 'the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something. There are four factors used to determine fair use of copyright material. These are purpose of use for the copyright material, nature of the copyrighted work, amount of the copyrighted work used, and the effects on the market value of the copyright material. Attribution, according to US copyright law, is giving credit to the copyright holder of the OER when you use or modify the resource. It is important to note that copyright laws are complex. It is essential that you conduct your own investigation when you are concerned with whether you are in compliance with US.
