ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we introduce some background to thinking about horse-human relationships. Horses are arguably different from other domesticated animals and are embedded in an extensive equestrian industry. We ask who horses are, focusing on three significant roles in relation to humans: as workers, as therapists and within contexts of performance. We also ask how we can include horses’ points of view, particularly in relation to our research on horses and humans that informs this book.
