ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book argues that there is a need to engage in a much more informed way with the ongoing reconfiguration of the relations between the media and the state in the current era. Rather than dealing with the mass media and social media as if they were separate and distinct domains, then, it would make more sense to think of the re-invented media as composed of a complex repertoire of interlinked and interoperable capacities. James Curran has examined the 'long tradition of millenarian prophecy' in relation to new media technologies. The chapter suggests that there is truth in the perception that the alignment between elements of new media studies and the entrepreneurial values of cool capitalism has resulted in media studies relinquishing some of its traditional scepticism about the information it gleans from the media industries.
