From its beginnings, fi lmmaking as form and practice has depended on and been defi ned by its technology. Changes in fi lm technology have changed fi lm as a medium throughout its history-its expressive abilities as well as business and distribution practices. A major impact of new technology on fi lmmaking was the introduction of sound in the s. Th is expanded the medium and also ended many careers of early movie stars, whose voices did not match their on-screen personas. Th e fi rst “talking feature fi lm” or “talkie” was Th e Jazz Singer (), produced by Daryll F. Zanuck and directed by Alan Crosland. It became a major box offi ce hit and ushered in the era of “synchronized sound” fi lm production. Already by , talking pictures were the norm.
