ABSTRACT

As we begin our discussion about rigor and assessment, we’ll start with planning. You may be wondering why we wouldn’t jump into types of rigorous assessments, but the reality is that, without strong planning, you can’t have strong assessments. Oftentimes, we use whatever assessment comes with our program—whether that is a textbook or computer resource— add in a few formative assessments, and we think we are done. But the most effective assessment comes from a detailed look at what we want to accomplish, then the development of a plan for accomplishing the goals. For our purposes, we’ll look at planning assessments, whether they are formative or summative.
