ABSTRACT

There are multiple perspectives that can be taken on the reviewing/assessing elements of appraisal. From a measurement perspective, ratings are very much the focus of attention. From a social/communication perspective, it is the feedback that comes to the fore. From a justice perspective, it is the fairness of the appraisal arrangements and the way that they are enacted by line managers that come into play, along with the fairness of the assessment and any consequential outcomes. Though the evolution of PA into PM brought with it greater advocacy of more frequent interim reviews, a requirement for an annual review remains the foundation of the typical appraisal arrangements. This annual event is likely to include a conversation between appraiser and performer. Agreement on action on development needs and on performance objectives for the next review period may also be included within this discussion and form, or possibly as a separate event/document.
