ABSTRACT

Table 12.1 summarizes the effectiveness of treatment as a function of demonstration and real-world operations. Inspection of Table 12.1 reveals that RNR adherence was associated with enhanced recidivism reduction in the case of each of the three types of programs. With full adherence, an r of .15 for realworld/routine programs are modest compared to the comparable mean effects reported for demonstration projects (.34). Yet, a mean effect of .15 looks very good compared to the increased crime associated with real-world programs that show no adherence to RNR (−.02). Treatment can work in real-world conditions. This is a conclusion also made by others. Lipsey’s (1999) analysis of 196 “practical rehabilitative programs” led him to write that “rehabilitative programs of a practical ‘real world’ sort clearly can be effective” (p. 641).
