ABSTRACT

RMAA works have unique characteristics which render precarious safety problems. Safety practices appropriate for new construction works may not be appropriate for RMAA works. This chapter uses Hong Kong as an example to illustrate safety problems and practices of RMAA works in developed societies. Although Hong Kong is used as a case study, most of the problems and practices are common in developed societies. Causes of accidents and difficulties in implementing safety practices for RMAA works will be discussed. Discussion is based on research findings drawn from nine interviews with RMAA contractors and two rounds of Delphi survey with 13 multidisciplinary experts of RMAA safety in Hong Kong (Hon, Chan, & Wong, 2010). Details of the interview and Delphi survey can be found in Appendix A and B respectively.
