ABSTRACT

The introduction sets out the aim of the book, namely to provide an overview of how we might think ecologically about the global political economy. It sets out a key distinction between ‘environmental’ and ‘ecological’ approaches in political economy, the importance of the latter, and that most of the literature in international political economy (IPE) is restricted to a narrow ‘environmental’ approach whereby the environment is an ‘issue area’ in IPE. The introduction shows that by contrast, an ecological approach understands ecology as integral to all aspects of the operation of the global economy.
