ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 discusses the relationship between ecology and resistance movements in the global economy. It starts with a discussion of classic instances of such resistance, such as the Chipko movement in India, as instances where such ecological resistance arises out of how the global economy, particularly given its colonial legacy, threatens livelihoods for people around the world. It then discusses the relationship, sometimes uneasy, between worker resistance to global capitalism and ecological movements. Finally, it discusses the relationship between resistance to global capitalism based on these material threats, and movements based more on ideological opposition to global capitalism, and the ways that ecological resistance is generative of novel worldviews envisaging post-capitalist futures.
