ABSTRACT

There are many different interpretations of the idea of healthy buildings. At an international level there has been a huge amount of interest in the subject, IAQ and related topics. This has provided an almost inexhaustible source of information for this book. However the level of knowledge and understanding of healthy buildings is barely on the agenda in the UK and Ireland, and when it is discussed, the issue of building materials and hazardous emissions is rarely considered. In order to understand why this is the case, it is necessary look at the different policies and theories adopted by a range of organisations and individuals and explore why so many have their head in the sand about the risks and dangers to building occupants.
