ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the role of the social worker in creative expression. It examines the contribution of creative expression in helping to address emotional stress. The chapter also describes how expression methods may contribute to the reduction of emotional stress. Creative social work methods aim at using the power of art and spirituality through symbolism, metaphors and stories. The goal lies in alleviating the psychological and spiritual pain of not only clients and stressed out family members but also that of the professionals who play a stimulating role in this process. Clients who have a difficult time verbalizing their problems and emotions can use alternative forms of expression. The social worker proposes to the client that the stressful event or experience be addressed during the course of the sessions by writing. Creative therapy and other humanistic intervention strategies have become increasingly popular when working with clients and their relatives who are suffering from life-threatening diseases, particularly when children are involved.
