ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the social worker's role in the client's effective communication: how can the client constructively turn wishes into behaviour? It explores the term 'behavioural stress' to denominate insufficient assertive behaviour. The chapter also describes how stress is built up and maintained by clients due to the lack of skills. It explains what the behavioural method has to offer in order to reduce this behavioural stress and enhance social strengths. The chapter distinguishes three types of territorial skills that may be relevant for the grieving person in practicing proper skills in terms of defence; acquisition and managing own desires and territory. Practicing territorial skills may relieve stress for the grieving person. Behavioural therapy is a subject widely written about, however only a few works mention the importance of the behavioural method in grief counselling. Teaching the client behaviour which is desired by the environment, without the client's proper consent.
