ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the mediation method, employed by social workers to help parties resolve areas of conflict. It addresses what is meant by relational escalation? The chapter also addresses which mediation techniques are utilized to help conflicting parties to resolve areas of conflict in a dignified way? The mediation method is the method where, through mediation, the social worker is trying to make arrangements with conflicting parties, who, if they both accept, will try to make agreements in the areas of conflict. Mediation may be requested by spouses who are about to separate, but also in a conflict between employees and employers, patients and doctors as well as victims and perpetrators. Through mediation legal action can be avoided, which will minimize the escalation of conflicts. Mediation is one of the most commonly used methods of conflict management because it is informal, quick, easy to apply and confidential. There are two types of mediation: task oriented and process oriented.
