ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the physical survival response to life events such as loss and trauma when they are perceived as life-threatening. It addresses what is the role of the survival brain in life events such as loss and trauma? The chapter addresses how does physical stress arise in clients? It addresses how can the bodywork method contribute to reducing physical stress and restoring one's strength? Psychosomatic reactions to life events such as loss and trauma have been determined by a number of researchers. The social worker paying attention to the body signals coming from the client is useful because clients very often suffer from physical tension complaints. Conversion complaints take their name from their nature: a subconscious, repressed psychological injury which is turned into the disruption of a physical functionality. Conversion complaints are pain complaints, blindness, deafness, paralysis, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fainting.
