ABSTRACT

Mental and physical training are crucial aspects of any sporting activity. Both competitive athletes and leisure participants must train in a specific physical practice if they hope to master the skills to any degree. Humancompanion animal interactions also involve training, as each individual must learn how to be with the other, what the other’s behaviour and communication means, and how not to behave around the other. Training within equestrianism is, therefore, extremely important for interspecies communication, safety and sporting development. In this chapter I consider different types of training that humans and horses engage in together.
