ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the main factors influencing child development. As the child grows older he or she gradually changes, showing new skills and abilities. Many factors influence the timetable of events, including genes, temperament, parenting, the family environment and so on. The years of childhood are best seen as a series of changes and transitions to different ways of handling situations or making sense of the world. The development of very young children is full of highly visible milestones as far as physical development is concerned. These include crawling, walking, running, climbing stairs, and so on. One vital area of child development has been suggested by some child psychologists as being possibly affected by early screen use and that is the area of attachment. Children's ability to communicate and to understand the communications of others is central to their development. The child's interests and personality will affect the way he or she makes use of the digital technology.
